This is Fred Ball for Zions Bank, speaking on business.
One of the most beautiful and popular cruise stops in the world is Portofino, Italy. The little harbor town on the Italian Riviera is so beautiful, and it is always crowded with visitors.
Well, Portofino in Salt Lake City is also becoming a very popular destination spot for those who love great environment, service and pasta.
The Portofino Pastaria, located on 33rd South and 2991 East is a fairly new restaurant but one that has gained a loyal, pleased clientele.
Jim Acord is the owner and manager. It is no surprise that he is in the restaurant business. He has always been interested in the business since he was a little boy. No wonder. His family has the very popular Arlington House Catering Company in Utah County. It seems he has always been around the food business.
Jim later became involved with both the Mikado Restaurant and the Gastronomy chain as he honed his experience in food preparation and presentation. As he worked for these highly regarded organizations he began his planning to become an owner/operator. He knew that people enjoyed pasta. He also knew that if he concentrated on always homemade, always fresh and the finest ingredients that he could always offer a great dining experience.
Jim offers two great soups each day. My wife Joyce particularly loves the Chicken Curry. She was told that this recipe has been in the Acord family for a long time and is one of his mother's favorites. He also offers five great salads, several pasta entrees and a variety of raviolis and lasagnas.
One of my great comfort foods is macaroni and cheese. Now you won't find many macaroni and cheese dishes offered in Italy, but this is an American pasta favorite so Jim has it on his children's menu. One night recently I asked Jim if I could lie about my age and order the macaroni and cheese from the kids menu. "Of course," he said. "No problem." Well, it was delicious! But, everything I have ever ordered at Portofino was great.
If you are looking for a friendly place with great food, great service and ambiance and really reasonable prices, try the Portofino on 33rd South. This Portofino really lives up to it's popular namesake.
