NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Moderate to heavy rain continues to fall over southern Louisiana, where at least two people have died and dozens had to be rescued from waist-high water that engulfed their homes. The National Weather Service says a flash flood warning has been issued for southwestern Louisiana, as the storm system drifts slowly west after drenching the southeastern part of the state. Mississippi and Alabama were also struggling with the effects of heavy precipitation.

ISTANBUL (AP) — Turkish authorities have prepared an official request for the temporary arrest of U.S.-based Islamic cleric Fethullah Gulen (FEH'-too-lah goo-LEN') over his alleged involvement in last month's coup attempt. That's according to Turkey's state-run Anadolu news agency, which says the request has been submitted to Turkey's Justice Ministry to be relayed to U.S. authorities. Gulen lives in Pennsylvania. Turkey claims a movement he heads was behind the failed coup that left more than 270 people dead.

CAIRO (AP) — Egyptian Christians have staged a rare protest in downtown Cairo to demand the government uphold their rights. They say they are being treated as second-class citizens in the Muslim-majority country. Standing on the steps of a courthouse in the capital, some three dozen demonstrators braved Egypt's protest ban to hold signs calling for their legal rights to be upheld in disputes between Muslims and Christians.

RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — Rio security officials say 30 people protesting against the Olympics were detained yesterday following clashes with police. The security officials say the protesters were wielding long planks of wood and throwing rocks at police as they tried to march toward the Olympic stadium. Cellphone videos show police firing tear gas and yelling at the protesters, some of whom were masked. Left-wing critics of government corruption and hefty spending on the Olympics have held several small protests during the games.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — A girl who fell from a Ferris wheel in Tennessee is improving. The Greenville Sun says 6-year-old Briley Jae Reynolds, who has been listed in critical condition for four days, has been upgraded to serious condition. Two other girls who fell to the ground with her have been released from the hospital. Inspectors found that rivets on the gondola carrying the girls had come loose.
