NEW ORLEANS (AP) — With a state of emergency already in effect in southeastern Louisiana, forecasters say more rain is likely today in a region where at least two people died and dozens had to be rescued from waist-high water surrounding their homes. Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards declared a state of emergency and has scheduled a news conference to discuss the flooding situation. Southern Mississippi is also threatened.
ERIE, Pa. (AP) — Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton dialed up the pressure on Republican Donald Trump by releasing her 2015 tax returns, something Trump has refused to do claiming an ongoing IRS audit prevents it. The filing shows that the Clintons earned $10.6 million and paid a federal tax rate of 34.2 percent last year. Trump told Pennsylvanians the only way he'll lose that state is if there's cheating.
HATCH, N.M. (AP) — Authorities in New Mexico say a police officer was gunned down during a traffic stop and a motorist was shot during a carjacking before authorities were able to chase down three suspects and arrest them. Hatch, New Mexico, officer Jose Chavez was shot in the neck and died at University Medical Center in El Paso, Texas. The motorist shot in the carjacking was also taken to the
SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) — Puerto Rico is under a health state of emergency as the result of a Zika epidemic. The U.S. government declaration allows the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to award grants, access emergency funds and temporarily appoint personnel where needed. The announcement came hours after Puerto Rico reported 1,914 new cases in the past week, for a total of 10,690 since December.
MAIDUGURI, Nigeria (AP) — Despite the danger form Boko Haram extremists, polio vaccines are being rushed to northeastern Nigeria after the discovery of two paralyzed toddlers recently. It's a setback for the country which had been declared polio free in October. The World Health Organization said the new cases indicate the wild polio virus has circulated undetected for five years in Borno state.
