RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — A trio of American pool victories at the Rio Olympics. Anthony Ervin won the gold in the 50-meter freestyle. Katie Ledecky broke the world record in the 800 freestyle. Maya DiRado prevailed in the 200-meter backstroke. But in a shocker, Michael Phelps found himself in a three-way tie for second behind Joseph Schooling of Singapore in the 100-meter butterfly.

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. (AP) — Virginia state police say six people have died in a plane crash near the Fredericksburg airport. The small plane was attempting to land when it struck a tree line, crashed and immediately caught fire. A police spokeswoman says all six people were from out of state. The cause of the crash is under investigation.

SILVER SPRING, Md. (AP) — A third body has been recovered from the burned-out remains of an apartment building in suburban Washington, D.C. The explosion and fire in Silver Spring, Maryland, injured more than 30 people. Witnesses likened the blast to a bomb going off, and people more than a mile away reported their homes shaking. No word yet on the cause.

NAPOLEON, Ohio (AP) — A van carrying members of a girls' high school water polo team was struck by a semitrailer in Richfield Township, Ohio. The crash killed the van driver's teenage daughter and critically injured the van driver and four teenage players. Authorities say the van's driver failed to yield at an intersection.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — A judge has overturned the conviction of a Wisconsin man found guilty of helping his uncle kill a woman in a case profiled in the Netflix series "Making a Murderer." The judge ruled that investigators had coerced a confession using deceptive tactics. He ordered Brendan Dassey freed within 90 days unless prosecutors decide to retry him.
