ROYAL OAK, Mich. (AP) — A man who survived being clipped by a train in suburban Detroit has been released from the hospital — and ticketed for disregarding a railroad crossing signal.
The Daily Tribune reports (http://bit.ly/2b6sFkL ) that the 27-year-old man was filming a cellphone video of a freight train on one set of tracks in Royal Oak around 1:15 a.m. Wednesday when he was struck by an Amtrak passenger train going in the opposite direction.
Police Lt. Dave Clemens says the Royal Oak man is "very, very lucky to be alive." Clemens says the Amtrak train was slowing down as it approached a station. The newspaper says the man broke a bone in one hand, and suffered minor head injuries, scrapes and bruises.
Police say the crossing signals were working properly at the time.
