LAS VEGAS (AP) — Authorities and friends have identified three family members killed in a weekend crash and fire that also badly injured two other people returning home to the Las Vegas area after a trip to Utah. The Clark County coroner said Tuesday that 56-year-old Michael Brandt, 25-year-old Ashley Piena and 20-year-old Carlan Michael Brandt died in the Sunday afternoon wreck on Interstate 15 near Valley of Fire State Park and Moapa (moh-AH'-puh). They were all from Henderson.
LAS VEGAS (AP) — Nevada officials have approved another $125,000 to defend a voucher-style education program that's in a legal battle at the state Supreme Court. Supreme Court justices heard arguments last month on whether to lift a hold on the Education Savings Account program, which allows parents to tap public education money for private school tuition.
ELKO, Nev. (AP) — Authorities say a fast-moving wildfire has a road, trails and campgrounds closed while crews work to stem its spread near Nevada's second-highest mountain peak. The National Park Service said Tuesday that the fire near Wheeler Peak started small on Monday, but quickly spread over an estimated 5 square miles of rugged canyons and hillsides in Great Basin National Park west of Baker.
LAS VEGAS (AP) — A federal trial has begun in Las Vegas for a suspended Clark County School District police officer accused of attacking a student and a staff member at an alternative high school campus, and of trying to cover it up. Trial for 45-year-old James Lescinsky (les-IHN'-skee) is expected to take several days. The officer could face decades in prison if he's convicted.
