Suzuki was hitless in his first three at-bats of the game before the big hit against Chris Rusin. At 42 years, 290 days he is the second-oldest player by three days over Ricky Henderson to reach the milestone.
NEW YORK (AP) — Alex Rodriguez will end his major league career during Friday's game between his New York Yankees and the Tampa Bay Rays. The 41-year-old Rodriguez has struggled this season, hitting just .204 with nine homers and 29 RBIs. The three-time American League MVP and a 14-time All-Star hit 696 home runs during a career pockmarked by admitted steroid use and other allegations of performance-enhancing drugs.
CANTON, Ohio (AP) — The Hall of Fame game between the Green Bay Packers and Indianapolis Colts was canceled because of poor field conditions. Representatives of the hall and both teams met several hours before the scheduled kickoff to discuss the turf, and the Packers and Colts felt the field was not safe. Most noticeable were bare spots around midfield, and several players said painted areas were too hard.
CROMWELL, Conn. (AP) — Jim Furyk (FYOOR'-ihk) broke the record for lowest round in golf history on Sunday, but it wasn't enough to win the PGA's Travelers Championship near Hartford. The 46-year old former U.S. Open champ turned in a PGA Tour record 58 that included a course-record 27 on the front nine. However, Furyk's 11-under total was three shots behind winner Russell Knox, who closed with a 2-under 68 for a 14 under total that left him one stroke ahead of Jerry Kelly.
WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. (AP) — Denny Hamlin has earned his first career road course victory by holding off a last lap challenge at Watkins Glen. Hamlin was battling Martin Truex, Jr. on the final lap until when Brad Keselowski tapped Truex and spun him out. Joey Logano finished second, followed by Keselowski, AJ Allmendinger, and Stewart.
