SAN DIEGO (AP) — The San Diego Padres have signed left-hander Clayton Richard, who previously pitched for the team.

The Padres made the move Saturday. Lefty Matt Thornton was designated for assignment.

Richard was 0-1 with a 6.43 ERA in 25 games for the Chicago Cubs this season before being released on Wednesday. He pitched for the Padres from 2009-13, going 40-39.
