COTTONWOOD HEIGHTS — A man is dead following a collision between a motorcycle and a car Thursday night, police said.

Emergency crews were dispatched to the scene on Highland Drive near 6900 South around 7 p.m. to a report of the accident, according to Cottonwood Heights Police Lt. Mark Askerlund.

Askerlund said the man was riding his motorcycle and traveling south on Highland Drive when a woman driving a car in the northbound lane apparently did not see the motorcyclist while making a left-hand turn into a business parking lot and struck the motorcyclist.

The man driving the motorcycle died at the scene. His name was not immediately released.

Highland Drive is closed between 6600 South and Fort Union and will be for “several hours,” Cottonwood Heights police tweeted out.

Police are still investigating the accident and Askerlund said it was too early to tell if any citations would be issued in the case.

The man is the third person killed in a motorcycle accident within the past 24 hours in Utah. Two people were killed following a collision between a car and a motorcycle Wednesday night in Sunset.

"The motor public needs to be aware who is around them especially in heavy traffic," Askerlund said. "Like the slogan goes, we need to share the road."

More information will be added as it becomes available.
