This is Fred Ball for Zions Bank, speaking on business.
I've always enjoyed movies, and nowadays, there are plenty to see. But my favorite movies are the ones that are simply good, clean entertainment, which in my opinion, are becoming something of a rarity. Many films have great stories, interesting plots and dazzling effects. But they're often dragged down by violence, adult themes and strong language.
Well, a Utah business is making it possible for us to see some of the quality movies without the detractions. It's called Clean Flicks, and since starting just two years ago, it's already making a sizable niche in the market.
CleanFlicks edits movies that have been released on video. Through its own process, the movies are viewed and cleared of profanity, adult themes and gory violence. The edits are seamless. Unless a person has already seen the film, he or she would never know a word or scene had been deleted.
You may wonder how editing of that nature can be done amid what seems to be a mountain of copyright laws. Well, once someone purchases a video, it basically becomes their property. They're entitled to do what they want with it so long as they don't try to resale it. A person can purchase a video, take it to CleanFlicks and for about $12 end up with a good, clean movie.
But CleanFlicks also rents movies. They do it by offering ownership in each of their stores--something similar to a co-op. For roughly $15 a month, patrons become members, which allows them to view edited movies owned by the company.
Ray Lines started the company in his home in Orem. He did so out of his own desire to see popular movies without the negative content. The concept spread among family, friends and neighbors, and soon CleanFlicks was in business. Now, the company operates 70 dealer stores in 16 states and revenues are expected to be around $2 million this year. Patrons can order movies online at cleanflicks.com. The web site features a wide selection of many of the top box office movies and welcomes requests for anything not listed. Not every movie can be edited, however, due to overall theme or excessive negative content. But at least, many of the good ones can be seen thanks to CleanFlicks.
