A new report is out about the safety of smaller SUVs. Keep this in mind if gas prices have you thinking about getting a smaller SUV.

"You're giving up some protection when you trade down in size and weight. Make sure you're getting a vehicle with good crash-test ratings, like our top safety picks," says Adrian Lund, spokesman for the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

Lund says the top safety picks says are the Ford Escape and its Mercury and Mazda cousins, the Mazda Tribute, and the Nissan Rogue.

Marginal or merely acceptable ratings went to the Suzuki Grand Vitara, Chevy Equinox and Pontiac Torrent, as well as the Jeep Patriot and Wrangler.
