This is Fred Ball for Zions Bank, speaking on business.
With Utah’s recent construction boom, we have seen our cityscapes change. And as our cities have grown, so have the construction firms that have done the work.
One firm in particular comes to mind. It’s The Layton Companies, a business based in Sandy that earned more than $300 million in revenue last year. Engineering News-Record, a construction trade magazine, named Layton, 122nd on its list of the top 400 contractors in the nation. And Utah Business Magazine listed Layton as the top commercial contractor in the state for the fifth year in a row.
It’s pretty impressive considering that The Layton Companies began in Alan Layton Sr’s basement back in 1953 with two employees. Today, Layton is a group of companies with strategic business units that specialize in niche markets. This focused strategy has several wonderful benefits. One is Layton’s ability to significantly improve the delivery of projects for their customers regardless of the client’s size or the clients’ construction process experience. The company’s structure also creates terrific opportunity for key Layton people. Today, The Layton Companies is owned exclusively by the employees.
The Layton Companies’ subsidiaries include Layton Construction, Layton Southwest, Inc., in Phoenix, CEntry (pronounced See-entry) Constructors and Engineers, Utah’s leading industrial engineering and construction firm. Last year, Layton formed Interior Construction Specialists, Inc. to focus solely on tenant improvement, renovation and remodeling of retail, commercial and luxury residential projects.
Their work is both impressive as well as expansive. From Murray City’s new electrical generating facility to the Forever Young Center at the Primary Children’s Medical Center. From the new South Towne Exposition Center in Sandy to Mesquite’s new City Hall. From Alabama to Orange County and from Phoenix to Pennsylvania--there are satisfied customers of The Layton Companies.
