This is Fred Ball for Zions Bank, speaking on business.

You know, managing a business as a second job isn't easy. In fact most people who run a business as their primary occupation find that it takes nearly all of their time. So, how does one run a business as a side job?

Well, Richard Fugate of Salt Lake does well maintaining his shelf installation company in addition to his separate day job. It provides steady workflow and additional income, which is exactly the reason Richard started the business.

Three years ago, Richard and his wife Teresa, like many couples, both held jobs to support their family. But Teresa suffered back problems and soon found that she could no longer do her job. Lacking that income, Richard searched for a business opportunity to fill the money gap. He found it in the newspaper want ads under an opportunity to own a dealership of the Pull-Out Shelf Co. It seemed to fit with Richard's handyman skills and his creative mind. Richard responded and soon had rights to install Pull-Out shelves for the entire Salt Lake area.

The Pull-Out Shelf Company had successfully developed and patented a way to make cabinets more accessible and convenient to use. Instead of traditional shelves that stood stationery within the cabinet, Pull-Out shelves could slide out on shelf glides held suspended by steel brackets. The shelves could hold up to 75 pounds and could often double the usable storage space in kitchen cabinets and pantries; even beneath sinks in kitchens and bathrooms. Pull-Out shelves have proven to be a popular, easy way for people to avoid bending, twisting and getting on their hands and knees to reach items in their cabinets.

In little time, Richard had a growing list of satisfied customers. He found that most customers were looking for a reasonably-priced and convenient way to store and access items in their existing cabinets without having to purchase an entire set of custom cabinets. Shelf installations are fast and clean, and their popularity has spread by word-of-mouth.

Since starting the Pull-Out Shelf dealership in Salt Lake, Richard has completed many installation projects, and he enjoys providing homeowners with a product that makes their lives easier on a daily basis. Installation projects have ranged from as few as two shelves to as many as 40, and they keep him busy on some evenings and some weekends, which for Richard is really ideal.

For Zions Bank, I'm Fred Ball. I'm speaking on business.
