Authorities say they're seeking a murder warrant against a man accused of stabbing a Fort Valley State University freshman to death on the campus of the school in central Georgia.

At a Wednesday news conference, Georgia Bureau of Investigation Special Agent J.T. Ricketson identified the suspect as 24-year-old Joseph Anthony Scott, a former student who had come onto campus Tuesday.

Police say Donnell M. Phelps of Marshallville, Georgia, was stabbed multiple times shortly after 5 p.m. Tuesday and was pronounced dead at a hospital.

Officials say Scott then stabbed campus safety officer Ernest Johnson as he was leaving the campus. Ricketson said Johnson is hospitalized but expected to survive.

Authorities say Scott is being held in the Peach County Jail. It wasn't immediately known whether he has an attorney.
