Rome (dpa) - Almost a month after a cancer operation in New York, world-renowned tenor Luciano Pavarotti was back in Italy, the Italian newspaper Il Messaggero reported Monday.

He was recuperating with his family at his house in Modena and preparing for a six-month course of chemotherapy, due to begin in two months.

The 70-year-old "tenorissimo" had an operation for a cancerous pancreatic tumour at the beginning of July.

"I have no plans at the moment. The illness is there and I must fight it, step by step," Il Messaggero quoted Pavarotti as saying on Monday.

However, the singer has said in the last few weeks that he intended to sing again and conclude his farewell tour of the world's stages. Asia and Germany are amongst the places he has visited on this tour since March 2005.

Pavarotti has suffered various health problems over the past few years. He was forced to cancel many concerts owing to back problems.

However, he put off his retirement again and again. His last big public performance was at the opening of the Turin Winter Olympics in February where he sang the Nessun Dorma aria from Puccini's Turandot.
