SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- A former member of a polygamous sect who has acted as a benefactor to teens who left or were kicked out of the group is accused by relatives and family friends of being abusive and abandoning his children financially.
The Salt Lake Tribune reported the allegations against Dan Fischer in a story Thursday. The paper cited 14 statements that were sent this week to the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee.
Fischer tells the Tribune that the statements are exaggerated and misleading. He also says they are no surprise considering his public criticism of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
Fischer testified last week in a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing about the FLDS church.
Attorney Rod Parker says he sent the sworn statements to get the FLDS' side of the story on the record with the committee. Parker says only critics of the polygamy culture spoke at the hearing.
