WASHINGTON (AP) — The DC Public Library is investigating patrons' reports that a library police officer asked a woman to remove her hijab.

Library spokesman George Williams said by telephone Thursday that the officer is off duty while the incident at the Watha T. Daniel/Shaw Neighborhood Library is investigated.

Williams says patrons complained to a manager and tweeted about the incident Wednesday afternoon, saying the officer held handcuffs in his hand as he spoke to the woman wearing a hijab, a headscarf worn by many Muslim women. He says the woman left, but officials are trying to find her to apologize and involve her in the investigation.

Williams says the officer was removed from the location and questioned. He says the library does not have any policy about head coverings, religious or otherwise.
