LAS VEGAS (AP) — A son of Nevada rancher Cliven Bundy is due for arraignment in U.S. District Court in Las Vegas today. Mel Bundy could ask a magistrate judge to let him out of jail to await trial on charges stemming from an armed confrontation with government agents in 2014. If he wins release, he'd be the first of 19 people indicted in the case to be freed since their arrests in recent weeks, including his father.
LAS VEGAS (AP) — State prison officials say a transitional housing facility in Las Vegas is helping parolees who can't yet afford life on the outside while also saving taxpayers money. The Las Vegas Review-Journal reports 41 former prisoners are staying at the 400-bed Casa Grande Transitional Housing Facility, where per-person daily housing costs are estimated at $43 less than prison.
BOISE, Idaho (AP) — A federal appeals court ruling recognizing a connection between bighorn sheep die-offs and diseases transmitted by domestic sheep could have far-reaching ramifications on grazing allotments in the West. The ruling this month against domestic sheep producers upheld a lower court ruling in Idaho supporting a U.S. Forest Service decision to close grazing allotments to protect bighorns.
WASHINGTON (AP) — Supreme Court nominee Merrick Garland was the lone dissenting judge in a federal appeals court case involving a proposed nuclear waste site at Yucca Mountain. The Las Vegas Review-Journal reports Merrick Garland was the federal appeals court chief judge for the District of Columbia when he dissented in a 2-1 ruling, saying money available to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission was insufficient. Yucca Mountain was proposed decades ago as a place to bury the nation's nuclear waste.
