Long time listeners know one of my favorite garden titles is the Sunset Western Garden Book. Day in and day out is the reference that I depend on the most frequently. It is meticulously researched and is stays current through regular updates. Even if your gardener has an older edition, a new copy with all of the updates might be a welcome gift.

Several useful companion volumes include the Sunset Western Garden Problem Solver to help solve pest problems, Sunset Western Landscaping for design help and Sunset Western Garden Annual for some of the latest suggestions in gardening.

If your gardener does not live in the Western United States, you will be pleased to know that Sunset has gone national. With the sale of Lane Publishing several years ago, they expanded their focus and now offer the regionalized Northeastern Garden Book, Southern Living Garden Landscape book and Midwestern Landscaping as well as many related companion volumes.

Numerous other titles round out the offerings on many different subjects. Consider a couple of new titles for excellent gift choices.

Sunset Container Gardening is an excellent volume for those who enjoy this fascinating and increasingly popular part of gardening. The reason for the interest is according to the book is “For more and more Americans, the only “land” they have to call their own is a balcony, a rooftop, or a courtyard with a few square feet of planting beds.”

More and more gardeners are enjoying this pastime and this volume offers a myriad of suggestions for the common and the unusual including vegetables, fruit trees, fragrance gardens and many other possibilities.

Another volume is the Sunset Theme Gardens. This book covers a wide range of design ideas that are based on geographic landscape ideas. If you want to design a part of your garden or landscape with formal, natural or sanctuary ideas, this book can help. Mediterranean, Japanese or even Feng Shui and many other garden designs round out the offerings in this book.

For the project minded gardener, Sunset Reinvent Your Garden, Simple Steps for Garden Makeovers is an excellent choice. It features makeovers for front gardens, side yards, personal living spaces urban retreats and many other projects to improve and help your own landscape.

Other titles that caught my interest for this season;

Landscaping with Ornamental Grasses, which is a popular new trend for low water, low maintenance landscaping.

Greenhouses, which covers design operation and maintenance of small hobby greenhouses.

Garden Watering Systems which covers the design and installation of garden watering systems.
