BRUSSELS (AP) — The top suspect in last year's deadly Paris attacks has been discharged from a hospital in Brussels, and his lawyer says he will fight efforts to extradite him to France for trial. Salah Abdeslam was shot in the leg when he was captured by Belgian police yesterday. Abdeslam is a French national and the subject of an arrest warrant issued by France.

PARIS (AP) — An Algerian man who's now being linked to the November attacks in Paris joined the Islamic State group in 2014 and told the extremists he wanted to die as a suicide bomber. That's according to documents given to The Associated Press by a Syrian opposition news site (Zaman al-Wasl). Instead, Mohamed Belkaid was shot to death by a police sniper during the raid in Brussels that led authorities to fugitive Sala Abdeslam.

BEIRUT (AP) — Activists say airstrikes on the Islamic State group's de facto capital in Syria have killed at least 39 people and wounded many others. It's not clear what country's warplanes carried out the airstrikes on Raqqa, which has been held by the extremists since 2013.

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — Conservative state senators in two states are proposing that all refugees register with the government. The bills are being proposed in both New York and South Carolina. The South Carolina measure would allow the sponsor of a refugee to be held liable if the refugee commits an act of terrorism.

NEW YORK (AP) — A New York City middle school teacher has been fined $300 for showing students a video of a beheading by the Islamic State group. The New York Post reports Alexiss Nazario showed the video to students at the South Bronx Academy for Applied Media. Students told investigators the video blacked out the actual beheading, but it showed the victim's severed head afterward. The City Department of Education tried to fire the teacher, but an arbitrator ruled in favor of the lighter penalty of a $300 fine.
