SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A bill that would have made it illegal for businesses to refuse to serve gay or transgender people for religious reasons will not pass this year. The bill's sponsor says he doesn't want to distract from a pending hate crime proposal which would add protections for gay and transgender people. Utah residents are currently protected in public businesses from discrimination based on race, color, sex, religion, ancestry or national origin. This plan would have added sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression to that list.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A longshot proposal for conservative Utah to join 19 states and the District of Columbia in abolishing the death penalty passed an initial vote in the state Senate after a five-minute presentation where no lawmaker asked a question or contested the proposal. Steve Urquhart, the Republican senator running the proposal, acknowledged the lack of discussion during his speech in the Senate floor.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Some are questioning the inconsistency of the release of police body camera video after authorities refused to share footage of Salt Lake City officers shooting and critically injuring a 17-year-old Somali refugee. The footage is at the center of a national discussion about police use of force. Police say keeping it private until the investigation ends is fairer to officers and the victim.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — The final person indicted in a food stamp fraud scheme in the polygamous community on the Utah-Arizona border has surrendered. The U.S. Attorney's Office in Utah says Kimball Dee Barlow will make his first court appearance today in St. George, Utah.
