Peru's president elect, the social democrat Alan Garcia, placed women at the head of six out of the cabinet's 15 ministries Thursday as he unveiled a new government one day ahead of his swearing in ceremony.

Garcia, who also headed the Latin American country during a disastrous stretch which forced him out 16 years ago amid economic ruin and guerrilla unrest, beat his nationalist rival Ollanta Humala on June 4 with 52.6 percent of the vote.

His ruling APRA party will not represent a majority of ministries after the close vote, although he did appoint his party right-hand man Jorge del Castillo as prime minister.

Garcia allotted the defense ministry post to Allan Wagner, the current Secretary General of the Andean Community of Nations (CAN), an economic community grouping together Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru.

Pilar Mazetti, who was health minister under outgoing President Alejandro Toledo, was named to the interior ministry post.
