KOLOMNA, Russia (AP) — Dutch skater Sven Kramer won the 5,000 meters for the seventh time at the world championships on Saturday, narrowly beating compatriot Jorrit Bergsma.
Kramer, who is also the Olympic champion in the 5,000, took the gold medal in 6 minutes, 10.31 seconds, beating Bergsma by 0.35 seconds.
Their closest challenger, Sverre Lunde Pedersen of Norway, was 4.77 seconds off Kramer's time. No other skater came within 8 seconds of the champion.
It is Kramer's second gold medal of the championships after he won the 10,000 on Thursday, and his 17th career gold across all events at the world single distance championships.
Host nation Russia celebrated a one-two finish in the 1,000 as Pavel Kulizhnikov took gold in 1:08.33, a tenth of a second ahead of Denis Yuskov, the winner of the 1,500 Friday. Bronze went to Dutch skater Kjeld Nuis, 0.14 seconds off Kulizhnikov.
U.S. skater Shani Davis could only manage fifth place, ensuring the four-time Olympic medalist finishes the world single distance championships without a medal.
South Korea's Lee Sang-Hwa became the first gold medal-winner from outside Europe at this year's championships with victory in the 500. She set a time of 74.859 seconds over two runs, beating U.S. skater Brittany Bowe by 0.804 seconds. China's Zhang Hong was third, a further 0.025 seconds back.
The Netherlands won its fifth gold medal of the championships in the women's team pursuit, but was pushed hard by Japan. The winning Dutch time of 2:58.12 was just 0.19 seconds faster than the Japanese team, with Russia winning bronze in 3:02.61.
