A man is behind bars in Tooele County after trying to run down a sheriff's deputy.
Twenty-year-old Jason Stout was arrested in Vernon this morning along with two juvenile suspects. Deputies say the attempted hit was just one of several crimes committed.
The Tooele County Sheriff's Office believes the three suspects stole a car last night in Layton then drove it to Stansbury Park and stole another one.
A reckless driver with no lights on was reported around 3:30 this morning in Stansbury Park. A patrol officer located the vehicle in Tooele and chased it 30 miles south on state Road 36 until a spike strip stopped the car just before Faust.
The deputy then tried to get the individuals out of the car. "Another vehicle come up behind him, blacked out, slammed on the brakes. The deputy had to dive out the way, and the two individuals in the first car jumped into the second car," explained Tooele County Sheriff Frank Park.
The sheriff's office believes Stout is the man who tried to run over the deputy.
Once Stout and the two juveniles were in the second car, they led officers into Vernon where another spike stopped them. At that point, they all ran.
A search was called in the area using a state helicopter, SWAT teams and the Utah Highway Patrol K-9 Unit.
The two juveniles were found first; the boy in a nearby home, and the girl in a field. Stout was found about three hours later in a small out building.
"The ending is exactly the way we would like to end something like this. We had enough information on Mr. Stout, we knew who he was, to get a warrant of arrest, but finding him out here just makes it a little bit sweeter," Park said.
Stout was booked into the Tooele County Jail. "There will be, I'm sure, a vast list of charges, probably the most serious one we will ask for is the attempted homicide on the deputy," Park said.
The two juveniles are being held at the juvenile detention center.
