BRENTWOOD, N.Y. (AP) — Officials say a Long Island school district is bolstering security measures after a 16-year-old student was involved in a possible gang-related shooting near the public library.
Newsday (http://nwsdy.li/1WqoQow ) says a Brentwood high school student is accused of shooting and wounding a man in the abdomen on Friday.
District Superintendent Levi McIntyre says random and unannounced searches will be conducted with metal detectors at all of its schools. A tip line has also been activated.
Suffolk Deputy Police Commissioner Tim Sini says police will announce a plan soon to combat crime in the area, including federal partnerships.
The student, Carlos Argueta, faces assault and other charges. He's being held on $80,000 bail or $160,000 bond.
It wasn't immediately clear if he had a lawyer who could comment on the charges.
