MIAMI (AP) — Eighty-one students have been recognized for their academic achievements at the 5000 Role Models of Excellence's 23rd annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholarship Breakfast.
The Miami-Herald reports (http://hrld.us/1RQrLIr) the mentorship program's event was held Monday at Jungle Island.
Over 500 students and community leaders gathered to fundraise for college scholarships for the graduating seniors.
Wilson Scholars have participated in the program since ninth grade, display academic achievement and have attended a summer program at Miami Dade College.
The event featured keynote speaker actor Omari Hardwick.
The drop-out prevention program for at-risk minority youth was founded in 1993 by former Miami-Dade School Board member and current U.S. Rep. Frederica Wilson. It serves 8,000 students ages 9-19 in Miami-Dade Schools.
Over 95 percent of the program's students graduate from high school.
