LOS ANGELES (AP) — A utility company in Southern California says it's given up trying to trap and burn the gas released by a huge natural gas leak in Los Angeles. SoCalGas says it's just too dangerous, and instead it'll continue drilling a relief well, which should reach the bottom of the 8,500-foot-deep well by late February or sooner. Officials say that's still ahead of schedule. Emissions from the leak have been making residents sick.
LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Tonight, Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder delivers his State of the State address, and he's likely to devote much of his time to the water crisis in Flint. Flint's drinking water is contaminated with lead, and the Republican is expected to further detail plans to address the contamination. Michigan is already providing lead testing, filters, bottled water and other essentials to the city.
WASHINGTON (AP) — A Senate panel is expected to vote Wednesday on easing up on healthier meal requirements at the nation's public schools. Some schools have complained that the existing rules were too much of a burden, and the proposed changes call for loosening the requirements on whole grains and delaying an upcoming deadline to cut sodium levels.
PARIS (AP) — The top floor of Paris' Ritz Carlton hotel is on fire. The posh hotel is where Princess Diana spent her final hours before the car crash that took her life. And the top floor has been under renovation for three years. Paris police say there are no known victims.
TOKYO (AP) — The world's oldest man has died in Japan. Yasutaro Koide (koy-deh) died today at age 112, just two months short of his 113th birthday. He was born March 13, 1903. Koide had said that his secret to a long life was not to smoke, drink or overdo it.
