COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — It was the first time in 17 years that civil rights leaders have gathered at the South Carolina Statehouse on Martin Luther King Jr. Day with no Confederate flag on the statehouse grounds. The banner was taken down over the summer after a young white man who posed for photos with a rebel flag allegedly shot to death nine black people at a Charleston church.
FLINT, Mich. (AP) — Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder is accusing Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton of making Flint's water crisis a political issue. During Sunday's debate, Clinton said that "if the kids in a rich suburb of Detroit had been drinking contaminated water and being bathed in it, there would have been action." Clinton says "every single American should be outraged" that Flint's tap water is contaminated with lead.
LYNCHBURG, Virginia (AP) — Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump has been trying to bolster support among evangelical Christians. Today he delivered the convocation address at Virginia's Liberty University, one of the country's most prominent evangelical Christian institutions. He told the crowd of more than 11,000 students, "We're going to protect Christianity." Trump also quoted what he called "Two Corinthians, 3:17," instead of "Second Corinthians."
HONOLULU (AP) — A U.S. Navy salvage ship is helping in the underwater search for two helicopters that crashed last week off the coast of Oahu while carrying 12 Marines. So far, no crash debris has been found. Various agencies have been searching above water, below water and along the shoreline since late Thursday when a civilian reported seeing the aircraft flying and then a fireball.
NEW YORK (AP) — A statement on the website of the band the Eagles says, "It is with the heaviest of hearts that we announce the passing of husband, best friend, father, comrade, and Eagles founder, Glenn Frey (fry)." Frey died today in New York of complications from rheumatoid arthritis, acute ulcerative colitis and pneumonia. He was 67. The Eagles' many hit singles include "The Best of My Love," ''Desperado," ''One of These Nights" and "The Long Run."
