BAGHDAD (AP) — The U.S. Embassy in Baghdad says "several" Americans are missing in Iraq. That's after local media reported that three Americans had been kidnapped in the Iraqi capital. The incident comes amid a deterioration of security in and around the Iraqi capital after months of relative calm.
GENEVA (AP) — A U.S. presidential envoy has tweeted a photo of Jason Rezaian (reh-ZY'-ahn) after the American journalist landed in Geneva following his release by Iran. Brett McGurk said he was "thrilled" and "overwhelmed" to greet The Washington Post reporter and two other Americans, former U.S. Marine Amir Hekmati (ah-MEER' hehk-MAH'-tee) and Idaho pastor Saeed Abedini (sah-EED' ah-beh-DEE'-nee). The three are now in Germany, according to a U.S. State Department official.
PARIS (AP) — French prosecutors have launched a manslaughter investigation after a man who was taking part in a drug trial died. A French hospital says the unidentified man, who had already been in a state of brain death, died today. He was one of six male volunteers hospitalized last week after volunteering to take an experimental painkiller. Authorities have said three of them face possible brain damage. The drug trial that began Jan. 7 involved 90 healthy volunteers.
HUNTINGBURG, Ind. (AP) — Authorities say no additional turkey farms in a southern Indiana county have tested positive for bird flu since an outbreak at 10 farms. The Indiana State Board of Animal Health says 100 farms tested over 24 hours came back negative. She says that's a sign control measures are working. Thousands of turkeys on the infected farms have been euthanized. The virus is a different strain that the one that led to the deaths of about 48 million turkeys and chickens last year.
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — The two best teams in the NFC will play for a spot in the Super Bowl. The 16-1 Carolina Panthers will host the 14-3 Arizona Cardinals next Sunday after beating the Seattle Seahawks 31-24. Today's other playoff game is just getting started in Denver, where the Broncos are hosting the Pittsburgh Steelers.
