JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) — A university student and graduate of Episcopal School of Jacksonville was one of only 26 young people from 19 countries chosen to attend Nobel Prize Week in Stockholm.
The Florida Times-Union (http://bit.ly/1ZtPwVr ) reports 19-year-old Carly Crump spent nine days in Sweden in December, presenting a research project to about 1,000 Swedish high school students.
The University of Florida freshman spent the week discussing her work involving mosquitoes. Her project evolved from offering blood meals to the insects to studying the proteins involved in the transmission of the dengue virus.
During her trip, Crump also attended lectures, a concert, the opening of the Nobel Creations Exhibition, the Nobel Prize Award ceremony and the Royal Banquet dinner at the Royal Palace. She said King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden handed out the medals.
Crump said that while some of the lectures were a little long and complicated, most were inspiring and funny. She also said the event was intended to encourage young people to push themselves to do better.
Crump has been recognized as one of the nation's top 16 young STEM researchers by U.S. News and World Report. She also won first place at the International Science and Engineering Fair in Pittsburgh, the Florida Science Fair and the Junior Science and Humanities Symposium at the University of Florida.
She is currently studying microbiology and wants to be a surgeon.
