STORRS, Conn. (AP) — The UConn Human Rights Institute at the University of Connecticut is receiving a $4 million financial gift from philanthropist George Soros and a 1966 alumnus of the school.
UConn officials say the donation is the program's largest.
The gift will require the UConn Foundation to raise an additional $2 million in matching funds. The combined $6 million will help build an endowment that will be used to provide scholarships to undergraduate students majoring in human rights.
Soros partnered with his friend Gary Gladstein and his wife Phyllis. Gladstein has been the institute's primary benefactor. He is giving $2 million.
Soros's grant is coming from Open Society Foundations, his grant-making network dedicated to building democracies with open governments.
The institute currently has 80 students majoring in human rights.
