OUAGADOUGOU, Burkina Faso (AP) — There's word from the pentagon that one U.S. military member is embedded with French troops at the scene of an al-Qaida attack on a luxury West African hotel in Burkina Faso. The source tells AP there are about 75 U.S. troops in Burkina Faso: 15 assigned to the embassy and about 60 assisting the French military. At least 10 bodies have been found and there is still heavy gunfire.
HALEIWA, Hawaii (AP) — The search continues off the Hawaiian island of Oahu following the crash of two Marine helicopters during a night training exercise. The water is said to be choppy and debris has been sighted, but there's no immediate word Friday on the fate of those aboard or what caused the accident. There were six crew members on each helicopter.
BURNS, Ore. (AP) — A man already facing federal, illegal camping charges from last year has been arrested near the Oregon wildlife refuge being occupied by an armed group protesting federal land policies. Authorities say Kenneth Medenbach was driving a government vehicle stolen from the refuge. Authorities also say they recovered a second stolen vehicle but provided no other details.
TAIPEI, Taiwan (AP) — It's election day in Taiwan and concerns about the economy suggest the China-friendly Nationalist Party will lose the presidency to the pro-independence opposition. There is also broad opposition to Beijing's demands for political unification. If the predictions hold up it would mean the return of the main opposition party to the presidency after eight years. The outcome in the legislature is less certain due to independents and smaller parties.
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — A small-town Tennessee warehouse supervisor turned in one of three tickets splitting the world-record $1.6 billion Powerball jackpot. No word on the winners from California and Florida. John Robinson and his wife, Lisa, say they won't stop working and won't make any wild purchases. They'll pay off their mortgage and their daughter's student loans. John Robinson says he's taking a lump sum because there are no guarantees about tomorrow.
