OUAGADOUGOU, Burkina Faso (AP) — Witnesses in Burkina Faso's capital say gunfire continues near an upscale hotel in the city center and explosions can be heard. Also, several cars are ablaze outside the four-story Splendid Hotel in downtown Ouagadougou. Site Intelligence Group says an Al- Qaida affiliate has claimed credit for the attack.
UNDATED (AP) — Plunging oil prices and China's slowdown are being blamed for the stock market's worst ever start to a new year. The Dow lost 391 points, or 2.4 percent today. The S&P 500 fell nearly 45 points, or 2.3 percent. And the Nasdaq dropped 126 points, or 2.7 percent. All three stock indexes are now in what's known as a correction, or a drop of 10 percent or more from recent peaks.
HONOLULU (AP) —A park on Oahu's North Shore will remain closed while a search is being conducted for 12 crew members who were aboard two Marine helicopters that collided. The Marine helicopters collided off the Oahu coast in Hawaii during a training mission last night. The names of the 12 crew members have not been released. The choppers were from Marine Corps Base Hawaii.
UNDATED (AP) — Hawaiian Airlines says an e-cigarette illegally put in a checked bag may have caused smoke and led to an emergency landing. The cargo-smoke indicator in the cockpit lit up during a flight from Honolulu to Maui on Tuesday, The airline says the captain turned on the plane's fire-suppression system, declared an emergency and landed quickly at the Mau airport.
NEW YORK (AP) — Sean Penn tells CBS' "60 Minutes" that he was hoping his article about the Mexican drug lord known as "El Chapo" would contribute to the discussion about the U.S. government's war on drugs. Instead, the public's attention is focused on the fact that Penn found and met with Joaquin Guzman in October while Guzman was still on the run. Penn says his article "failed."
