SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A former Ute tribal leader in Utah has been convicted child sexual abuse charges. Richard Jenks Jr. of Fort Duchesne was found guilty yesterday of three counts. Prosecutors say the 57-year-old man sexually abused the girl from the time she was 10 years old until she was 16. His lawyer says Jenks is innocent.

OGDEN, Utah (AP) — An Ogden man who pleaded guilty in connection with a murder-for-hire plot in Weber County has been sentenced to probation. The Standard-Examiner reports that jail time was not considered for Joseph Lopez because of his declining health. Prosecutors say Lopez agreed to pay David Northcutt $2,000 to kill his daughter's boyfriend. He paid half up front, and both men called 911 after arguing about the cash. Northcutt was sentenced to 165 days in jail for the same charge.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Obama administration says it's halting new coal leases on federal lands until it completes a comprehensive review. The question is whether fees charged to mining companies provide a fair return to American taxpayers and reflect coal's impact on the environment. Forty percent of the coal produced in the U.S. comes from federal lands. Most comes from Wyoming, Montana, Colorado, Utah and New Mexico.

PHOENIX (AP) — The brother of polygamous sect leader Warren Jeffs doesn't have to testify at an upcoming trial that will examine allegations that two towns on the Arizona-Utah line have discriminated against nonbelievers. The judge said he wasn't persuaded by the U.S. Justice Department's claim that it will be prejudiced if Lyle Jeffs doesn't testify. Justice Department lawyers can still show jurors Jeffs' deposition.
