JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) — Indonesia's national police chief says the group responsible for yesterday's attack in Jakarta was funded by the Islamic State movement. Five men attacked a Starbucks cafe and a traffic police booth with hand-made bombs, guns and suicide belts, killing two people and injuring 20. All the attackers were killed, either by their suicide vests or by police.
NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — There were some heated exchanges between Donald Trump and Ted Cruz at last night's Republican presidential debate in South Carolina. Cruz questioned Trump's conservatism, saying Trump had "New York values." Trump called Cruz' statement "very insulting," and said, "When the World Trade Center came down, I saw something that no place on Earth could have handled more beautifully, more humanely than New York."
LANSING, Mich. (AP) — A plan to overhaul Detroit's troubled school district by splitting it in two could cost the state up to $770 million over 11 years. Legislation was introduced Thursday to create the new Detroit Community School District, which would handle academic operations and other traditional functions. The current Detroit Public Schools would remain intact for tax-collection purposes and to retire the debt. But the proposal doesn't include how the state will pay for the plan.
NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — A Rutgers University professor is scheduled to be sentenced today in a New Jersey court for sexually assaulting a disabled man. Anna Stubblefield had claimed that the 34-year-old man consented to the relationship by communicating on a keyboard. But prosecutors say Stubblefield, the former chair of the university's philosophy department, used her position to take advantage of the man, who has cerebral palsy and is unable to speak. Stubblefield could get up to 40 years in prison.
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Prosecutors in Indiana have charged a third man with murder in connection with the slaying of an Indianapolis pastor's pregnant wife inside the couple's house. Prosecutors have added two counts of murder against 24-year-old Diano Gordon in the shooting death of 28-year-old Amanda Blackburn during a break-in. Two other Indianapolis men also are charged with the Nov. 10 slaying.
