LAS VEGAS (AP) — A Las Vegas woman accused of kidnapping and killing her ex-boyfriend's 10-year-old daughter in December 2012 has accepted a plea deal that is expected to spare her the possibility of facing the death penalty. KLAS-TV reports 53-year-old Brenda Stokes Wilson pleaded guilty in Clark County District Court today to first-degree murder with a deadly weapon, first-degree kidnapping with a deadly weapon, burglary, attempted murder and mayhem. Stokes Wilson originally pleaded not guilty and was scheduled to go to trial last April for allegedly killing 10-year-old Jade Morris, and slashing the face of a co-worker at a Strip casino in a jealous rage.
CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — Nevada prison officials say they're adding more guards and training officers how to use rubber bullets in an effort to end deadly shootings behind bars. But they defended the presence of shotguns in prisons during a meeting today of the Board of State Prison Commissioners. Nevada Department of Corrections Interim Director E.K. McDaniel gave an update on how the state is responding to recommendations from a prison use-of-force audit released in September. The report was commissioned as Nevada faces lawsuits over prison shootings, including one at High Desert State Prison in 2014 that left an inmate dead.
LAS VEGAS (AP) — Las Vegas-based data company Switch is expanding to Asia. Vegas Inc. reports that Switch's entity SUPERNAP International, which was formed in partnership with investors from ACDC Fund, announced today that it has begun building a $300 million data center in Thailand. SUPERNAP International CEO Khaled Bichara says the center will be a copy of SUPERNAP facilities in Las Vegas and is expected to be completed in early 2017. Switch is also building centers in Reno and Milan, Italy.
LAS VEGAS (AP) — Authorities say Rene Angelil, the husband and manager of Celine Dion, has died in Las Vegas. He was 73 and had battled throat cancer. Clark County Coroner John Fudenberg said his office was notified Thursday of Angelil's death. Angelil died at home in the Las Vegas suburb of Henderson under the care of a doctor. Fudenberg said he died of natural causes and no further investigation is expected. Celine and Angelil have three children.
