CHINO HILLS, Calif. (AP) — A real estate broker in the Los Angeles suburb of Chino Hills says he's happy that one of the three winning Powerball tickets was sold in his hometown -- even though none of his 20 tickets was a winner. Michael Fahim says the jackpot will put Chino Hills on the map. The 7-Eleven where that ticket was sold will get $1 million. A grocery store in Melbourne Beach, Florida, will get $100,000 for selling the second ticket, while a store in Munford, Tennessee, will get $25,000 for selling the third. None of the winners has come forward yet.
LOS ANGELES (AP) — He didn't win Powerball -- but there was still plenty of celebrating at Adam McKay's house in Los Angeles early today. The director had a small pre-dawn party for people who worked on his film, "The Big Short," so they could watch on TV as the film received a best-picture nomination. McKay himself is up for best director. And "The Big Short" has three other nominations as well. Amid the smell of waffles, McKay said, "We were screaming like idiots."
CHICAGO (AP) — A federal judge is criticizing the city of Chicago for fighting the release of a police shooting video for weeks only to suddenly reverse course and call for its release. Judge Robert Gettleman told city lawyers during hearing today that he was "very disturbed" by how they dealt with video showing a white police officer fatally shooting a black teenager, Cedrick Chatman, in 2013. City lawyers yesterday dropped their opposition to its release, which the judge is now allowing. It's part of a lawsuit Chatman's family filed against the city.
FLORENCE, Italy (AP) — The lawyer for the main suspect in the death of an American woman in Italy says his client fought with the woman after they had sex and did drugs -- but that he left her alive on her bed and had no intention of killing her. The lawyer says the suspect (Cheik Tidiane Diaw), a 27-year-old man from Senegal, reacted badly when Ashley Olsen tried to push him out of her apartment after they had consensual sex last week. Olsen's body was found the following day. Prosecutors say she suffered fatal head injuries and was strangled.
NEW YORK (AP) — David Bowie's family says it's planning a private funeral for the late rock music icon. The family posted a noted titled "Thank you" on Bowie's websites as well as his social media pages today. Bowie died Sunday at age 69 after battling cancer for 18 months. The family statement said "we are overwhelmed by and grateful for the love and support shown throughout the world."
