CALDWELL, Idaho (AP) — The family of a 6-year-old autistic student has filed a tort claim alleging that a speech therapist at the boy's school slapped him across the face. KTVB-TV reports that the claim against the Vallivue School District seeks $2,500 in damages, a public apology as well as "other appropriate remedies." The district says the matter was handled appropriately and that the therapist is on leave pending an investigation.

COEUR D'ALENE, Idaho (AP) — A defense attorney says the father of Eldon Gale Samuel III believed zombies were real and would one day come after his family, and he instilled that fear in his sons. The lawyer made the comments yesterday in opening statements for the murder trial of the 16-year-old Samuel, who is charged with killing his father and younger brother in 2014.

BOISE, Idaho (AP) — The FDA says a potato genetically engineered to resist the pathogen that caused the Irish potato famine is as safe as any other potato on the market. In a letter to Idaho-based J.R. Simplot Co., the FDA said the potato isn't substantially different in composition or safety from other products already on the market. There is no evidence that genetically modified organisms, known as GMOs, are unsafe to eat, but for some people, altering the genetic code of foods presents an ethical issue.

RENO, Nev. (AP) — Mikey Thompson scored 18 points, and James Webb III had 14 points and tied a season-high 14 boards as Boise State survived a late Nevada push to win 74-67 last night. Boise State has now tied a school record with 10 straight wins. The Broncos remain in a first-place tie with San Diego State which beat Colorado State last night.
