PORT JERVIS, N.Y. (AP) — An upstate New York man has suffered severe burns after his clothes caught fire during a blaze that destroyed two businesses.
Officials say the fire broke out around noon Wednesday in the Orange County city of Port Jervis.
Two businesses and a ground-floor apartment were destroyed, including a thrift store and a hair salon. The fire is believed to have begun in the apartment.
The Middletown Times Herald-Record reports that resident Scott Baker suffered burns to his feet, legs and hands. He was taken to a hospital in Westchester County.
Witnesses say Baker was covered in soot and wearing charred strips of clothing when he escaped through a broken window.
Baker told police he was sleeping and awoke to see the place on fire with most of the flames coming from the kitchen.
The fire is under investigation.
