LOS ANGELES (AP) — According to a California lottery spokesman, a winning Powerball ticket was sold at store in suburban Los Angeles. The numbers for the $1.5 billion jackpot were 4-8-19-27-34 and Powerball 10. The Associated Press has learned that the jackpot-winning ticket was sold at a 7-Eleven in Chino Hills, about 25 miles northeast of Anaheim. The identity of the winner is not yet known.
NEW YORK (AP) — It's a painful beginning to the year for many investors after a flat year of returns on the stock market. Volatile oil prices knocked the S&P down 10 percent from its November peak. Analysts are calling it a market correction. The Dow lost more than 300 points before closing within 25 points of its own correction level.
JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) — A massive explosion has rocked downtown Jakarta, Indonesia, in front of a popular shopping mall. An Associated Press reporter saw at least one dead body. It was not clear who was shooting but there was a massive police presence, which prevented reporters from going near the scene. Witnesses said the explosion was caused by a suicide bomber, but there was no immediate confirmation of the claim.
CHICAGO (AP) — The city of Chicago has reversed course and asked a federal judge to lift a protective order to allow the release of video that shows a white police officer fatally shooting a black suspect in a car theft in 2013. A video released in November of a white officer fatally shooting a black teen sparked protests. The city fought its release for over a year.
BRISTOL, Conn. (AP) — Sportscaster Jim Simpson has died at the age of 88. ESPN says he died in Arizona today after a short illness. Simpson worked for all of the major broadcast networks, calling 14 Olympics, 16 Major League Baseball All-Star games, six Super Bowls and six World Series for TV or radio.
