UNDATED (AP) — The rocky start to the new year reflects mounting worries on Wall Street about the slowdown in China, a plunge in oil prices to the lowest level in 12 years; and the implications for U.S. corporations, especially energy companies. The S&P 500 is now down 7.5 percent this year, while the Dow is off 7.3 percent. The Nasdaq is deeper in the red, down 9.6 percent.
FLINT, Mich. (AP) — A half-dozen members of the Michigan National Guard are now in Flint for briefings on the drinking water crisis and more troops will be coming. Flint's tap water became contaminated with too much lead after the city switched the water supply in 2014 to save money while under state financial management. Flint's mayor also wants federal assistance.
ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) — Geologists in Alaska say they have found evidence that a 125-mile section of the eastern Aleutian Islands that was once considered unlikely to generate earthquakes may be a future source of them. U.S. Geological Survey scientists on Sedanka Island near Dutch Harbor say the quakes might generate potentially devastating tsunamis that could hit Hawaii.
