PHOENIX (AP) — Arizona State University President Michael Crow is urging lawmakers to set a college-attainment goal aimed at increasing the number of Arizona residents with college degrees or certificates.

The Arizona Republic reports (http://bit.ly/1ZujduU ) that at a legislative breakfast on Tuesday Crow said he believes the statewide goal should be 60 percent.

Arizona is at about 37 percent now for percentage of adults who have at least an associate's degree. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the national average is about 40 percent.

Elsewhere, 31 states have set college-attainment goals. Officials say increasing the number of degree-holding adults in states can improve residents' lives and boost local economies.
