NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Tennessee House Democrats are celebrating a $100,000 donation from real estate mogul and former Nashville mayoral candidate Bill Freeman.
Freeman on Tuesday criticized the Republican supermajority in both chambers of the General Assembly, including for refusal to pass Gov. Bill Haslam's Insure Tennessee proposal to extend health coverage to 280,000 low-income people in the state.
Freeman poured $3.6 million of his own money on his mayoral bid last year, and has been a big donor to President Barack Obama and other Democratic causes in recent years. But he was driven out after a brief spell as treasurer of the state Democratic Party in 2009 because he had also contributed to Republicans like Bob Corker, Bill Frist and the GOP opponents of Democratic Gov. Phil Bredesen in 2002 and 2006.
