WASHINGTON (AP) — A leading Iranian official says the detention of 10 U.S. Navy sailors taken into custody by Tehran after their two boats drifted into Iranian waters "is being resolved." The Navy chief of Iran's powerful Revolutionary Guard told state TV today that an investigation shows that the sailors entered Iran's territorial waters because they had mechanical problems with their navigation system.
SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — South Korean defense officials have confirmed that it was a North Korean drone that crossed the border today, prompting the South to fire 20 machine gun warning shots. The drone then went back into North Korea without any shots hitting the drone. It is the first time shots have been fired in what has so far been a Cold War-style standoff between the Koreas in the wake of the North's nuclear test one week ago.
WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama has defended his record and urged Americans to elect another Democrat for president. In his final State of the Union address last night, the president said despite the rhetoric that America is getting weaker and its enemies are getting stronger, "The United States of America is the most powerful nation on Earth. Period. It's not even close."
WASHINGTON (AP) — South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley, who delivered the GOP response to the State of the Union address, says the U.S. should continue admitting "properly vetted legal immigrants, regardless of their race or religion." Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump has been calling for the banning of Muslims from entering the U.S. Haley, whose parents are immigrants from India, says the U.S. should refuse entry to refugees "whose intentions cannot be determined."
ANKARA, Turkey (AP) — Turkish police in the Mediterranean city of Antalya reportedly are holding three Russian nationals following a raid on suspected Islamic State militants. Turkey's state-run Anadolu Agency is reporting that the three suspects allegedly were in contact with ISIS fighters in conflict zones and had provided logistical support to the group. In November, the Russian Foreign Ministry said more than 2,700 Russians had left for Syria to fight for ISIS.
