HOUSTON (AP) — Baseball Hall of Famer Monte Irvin has passed away at 96. He broke into the major leagues in 1949, two years after Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier. Prior to joining the Giants, Irvin was a star in the Negro League.
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) — Alabama coach Nick Saban met with reporters today, just hours after watching his team win the national championship. Saban touched on several topics, including how he's looking forward to defending the title and his aggressive onside kick in the fourth quarter that led to the go-ahead touchdown against Clemson. Earlier in the day, The Associated Press crowned Alabama as national champions with Clemson ranked second, Stanford third, Ohio State fourth and Oklahoma fifth.
CHICAGO (AP) — Chicago Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville (KWEHN'-vihl) has been given a three-year contract extension. The Blackhawks have won three Stanley Cup titles with Quenneville, who has 781 career coaching victories in the NHL in regular season play.
MIAMI (AP) — The Miami Marlins have secured the services of two players. A person close to the negotiations says left-hander Wei-Yin Chen and infielder Chris Johnson have agreed to terms with the team. The person confirmed the deals to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because they hadn't been announced.
UNDATED (AP) — You've got some good games to choose from in men's college basketball tonight. Top-ranked Kansas is on the road for a game with 11th-ranked West Virginia, while eighth-ranked Miami of Florida is playing No. 13 Virginia on the Cavaliers home court.
