DAMASCUS, Syria (AP) — A humanitarian official with the U.N. says about 400 people trapped in a mountain village in Syria are in desperate need of evacuation. They face life-threatening medical complications and severe malnourishment. It's hoped that ambulances will get safe passage to the village of Madaya. Aid convoys have been able to make deliveries to other besieged villages. Syria's government has denied news reports of starvation.
WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama is expected to express optimism about the nation's future during his final State of the Union address on Tuesday night. White House chief of staff Denis McDonough says that's different than "the doom and gloom" offered by the Republican presidential candidates. Obama is not expected to make a direct appeal for Democratic support.
FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) — Bond has been posted by the mother of a Texas teenager who used an "affluenza" defense after killing four people in a drunken vehicle crash. Tonya Couch, who was arrested in Mexico along with her son, is to be released Tuesday morning. She has to be fitted with a GPS monitor. Eighteen-year-old Ethan Couch remains in custody in the Mexican resort town of Puerto Vallarta.
NORTHFIELD CENTER, Ohio (AP) — A woman and a child are dead and two other people remain unaccounted for after a house explosion in northeast Ohio. Neighbors in Northfield say the explosion shook nearby homes. Emergency responders arrived on the scene and saw flames shooting from the home. It's unclear what caused the explosion.
GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) — Alabama has won the College Football Playoff national championship. The Tide rolled to a 45 to 40 over Clemson in a nail-biter Monday night. Clemson, which had been No. 1, suffered its only loss of the season. The victory gives Alabama (14-1) its fourth national title in seven years.
