WASHINGTON (AP) — A U.S. defense official says American airstrikes are chipping away at the Islamic State group's cash piles. One airstrike is said to have hit what an official called a "cash storage facility" in the city of Mosul. It was at least the second time the U.S. has bombed the Islamic State's cash stockpiles. Combined with attacking the militants' oil resources, it is part of an effort to sap their financial strength.
MEXICO CITY (AP) — Actor Sean Penn is brushing off criticism for meeting with Mexican drug lord Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman, who has been recaptured. Penn says he has "nothin' to hide," after images published indicated he was under surveillance when he met with the Mexican actress who led him to Guzman. Penn is being criticized for writing an article about Guzman that appears in Rolling Stone magazine.
ATLANTA (AP) — Court records show FBI says agents were able use cell phone record analysis to link a Georgia woman to a string of jewelry store robberies across the South. They also checked social media postings and talked with friends who were suspicious. Abigail Lee Kemp wept in a federal courtroom in Atlanta on Monday.
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Authorities in Florida say they think they have found the remains of a toddler who was reported missing last summer and whose mother and boyfriend have been charged with child neglect. They say the remains were found in a wooded area and that they believe they are those of 21-month-old Lonzie Barton, who disappeared in July. His mother and her boyfriend were accused of child neglect. The mother pleaded guilty last week and could be called to testify against her boyfriend.
CANBERRA, Australia (AP) — Drinkers at a dusty Outback pub are raising their beer glasses to its most famous visitor, David Bowie. Bowie made the 400-mile drive from Sydney to the tiny outpost of Carinda in western New South Wales state to set the 1983 video clip for his hit "Let's Dance" in its only pub. Owner Malcom George says the town is grieving but business is booming.
