CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) — A former detective says a police bloodhound detected traces of a slain University of Virginia student inside the apartment and on the car door of the man charged in her killing.
Former Louisa County detective Buck Garner testified Monday at a pretrial hearing for 34-year-old Jesse Matthew Jr., who is charged with capital murder in the September 2014 disappearance and death of 18-year-old Hannah Graham. Media outlets report that Matthew's lawyers were challenging search warrants that allowed police to search his apartment and the car.
Matthew also faces first-degree murder charges in the 2009 death of 20-year-old Virginia Tech student Morgan Harrington.
He is serving a life prison term for a 2005 attempted murder and sexual assault in northern Virginia.
