PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Authorities say a worker trapped in a 14-foot-deep hole in Philadelphia has been rescued.

Philly.com (http://bit.ly/1VUPJ3Q ) reports the worker was helping repair a sewer line Saturday afternoon when dirt and boulders caved in, trapping his legs.

Deputy Fire Chief Troy Gore says rescuers worked carefully at the four-foot-wide hole to free the man and raise him using a harness. Witnesses said he was conscious and talking during the rescue. He was taken to a hospital for evaluation.

Gore says it was unclear whether the worker was already in the hole or fell in when the dirt collapsed. He had been hired to work on a private portion of a sewer line outside a nail salon.

The incident happened in the historic Old City neighborhood near Independence Hall.
