NEW YORK (AP) — La Verdad kicked off the 2016 campaign with her 16th career win, beating five outclassed rivals Saturday in the $100,000 Interborough Stakes for fillies and mares at Aqueduct.
And soon, it will be over. The 6-year-old will likely make one more start before heading off to broodmare duty. Trainer Linda Rice is aiming her toward the Barbara Fritchie Stakes on Feb. 13 at Laurel.
"Hopefully, she can get another win and go out a winner," Rice said.
The Interborough was her 11th stakes win, lifting the career earnings to $1,563,200.
Jose Ortiz guided the 6-year-old to a 2 3/4 length win over Dancing House. The time was 1:10.65 for the six furlongs.
La Verdad paid $2.80 and $2.10 as the 2/5 favorite. Dancing House returned $4.80. Room for Me finished third. There was no show wagering.
